Gullivers Action Group, which for over 5 years has been fighting any residential development on the Knole Road bowling greens, is delighted to make the following announcement:
Following the refusal of planning permission in 2006 for a 4-storey block and a 3-storey block of retirement flats on the site, the developers - Churchill Retirement Living - last year took the matter to appeal. There followed 2 ½ days of a Public Inquiry after which the Planning Inspector was persuaded to grant permission for the development.
A local resident then issued a legal challenge in the High Court. The result of that challenge is that the 3 defendants (the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Rother District Council and Churchill Retirement Living) have all conceded that the Planning Inspector was wrong to grant planning permission. Therefore Churchill Retirement Living does NOT have permission to build on this historic open space.
This decision is good news for the local community as well as the town at large, as this highly valued green space is one of the very last in central Bexhill. It was once a park known as Knole Park, and then the Cantelupe Croquet Ground - croquet being a sport for which the town was famous at the turn of the 20th century.
GAG is determined to see the site retained for recreation and sport, for all of Bexhill and its visitors to enjoy....
